When veteran engine designer H J Hatch set about creating AMC’s grand prix contender based on the 350cc AJS 7R customer racer, he chose an unusual cylinder head layout. His 1952 7R3 engine has three overhead camshafts to operate a single large inlet valve and two small exhaust valves.
